Monument rules in plain English
- Only one monument is allowed per lot, placed in the reserved location unless the Board approves otherwise; no monument until all lot charges are paid.
- All monument and marker foundations are built by the Board at the rights holder's expense, sized exactly to the base; monument foundations are at least 3 feet 6 inches deep. Fees are in the tariff of rates and are payable before work starts.
- Single grave lot: die base up to 36 in long x 16 in deep, monument up to 36 in high including the base.
- Two grave and four grave lots: die base up to 60 in long x 16 in deep, monument up to 36 in high including the base.
- The usual die base depth is 14 in (16 in maximum); die bases are exactly 8 in high, and the bottom 4 in must be rock-pitch finish.
- Monuments must be at least 8 in thick; an 8 in thick monument may not exceed 3 feet including the base.
- Sloping face monuments have minimum sizes (single grave 2-0 x 1-4 x 8/3, two grave 2-8 x 1-8 x 8/3) - ask the cemetery to explain these figures.
- No part of a monument may be longer or wider than its foundation.
- Materials: bronze, granite or marble only (veterans excepted). Nothing made wholly or partly of wood, plastic, ceramic, etc.
- Every marker must show the section/range/lot on the lower face of the die, in letters no taller than 3/4 in (mandatory).
- Bronze markers must be mounted on a concrete or granite base 4 to 6 in thick, set by the cemetery.
- All markers are set by the Board's employees or contractors, at the rights holder's expense.
- Rose Garden and Spruce Hill: flat markers only, within one inch of 24 x 18 x 4 in, in pink, red, black or grey granite. Last Post Fund markers may be one size smaller.
- Section J Range 10 (infant and cremation): markers must be 12 x 12 in or 12 x 24 in.
- No foot markers or corner stones on any lot.
- Pictures or photographs under glass, plastic or metal are not allowed on markers.
- No lettering on a side facing an adjoining lot unless there is room for a grave between the monument and the lot line.
- Removing a monument, adding an inscription or cleaning requires written permission from the Board.
- Contractors need an application signed by the rights holder; monuments can't be delivered until the foundation is finished.
- Always confirm with the cemetery office before ordering.
Bylaws can change and some are read automatically. Always confirm sizes with the cemetery office before ordering. Monaco Monuments checks your cemetery's rules for you as part of every order.
