Monument rules in plain English
- Only one monument may be erected on a single adult grave.
- Maximum monument height anywhere in the cemetery is 48 in (4 ft) [1.2 m].
- Maximum monument width on a single adult grave is 32 in [81 cm]; no base may be closer than 4 in [10 cm] to the lot side lines.
- No monument may cover more than 15% of the total area of the lot(s) it sits on.
- Die must be at least 8 in thick [21 cm], or at least 9 in [23 cm] if the monument is over 42 in [107 cm] tall.
- Only flat markers are allowed on cremation lots. Markers and corner posts must be dressed and set flush with the ground under the Superintendent's supervision.
- Bases must be granite, big enough to carry the die without shifting, with smooth-sawn squared bottoms; no shimming with spalls or chips.
- All monuments need a concrete foundation at least as large as the base, built by the cemetery (or its contractor) at the rights holder's expense; monuments can't be delivered until the foundation is done.
- Monument dimensions must be submitted in writing to the Superintendent before erection, and an application signed by the rights holder (with die and base dimensions, colour, design and inscription) is required before any contractor work.
- All charges must be paid in full before a monument or marker is installed, and the Care and Maintenance Fund amount under the FBCS Act must be paid.
- Wooden or metal crosses are allowed at the cemetery's discretion if they stay within the size limits and are stable.
- Contractors need at least $2 million liability insurance and WSIB coverage.
- Borders, fences, railings, walls, coping, metal enclosures and lettered boards are prohibited. Flower beds up to 18 in wide are allowed in front of monument bases with permission.
- Always confirm with the cemetery office before ordering.
Bylaws can change and some are read automatically. Always confirm sizes with the cemetery office before ordering. Monaco Monuments checks your cemetery's rules for you as part of every order.
