Monument rules in plain English
- Nothing (monument, footstone, marker or memorial) may be placed, moved or removed without the cemetery's permission, and only after all lot charges are paid; design plans (dimensions, material, construction and location) must be approved first.
- Single lot: one upright monument plus two flat markers, unless it is in a flat-marker-only section. Double lot: one upright monument plus two flat markers per grave. No monument on a single lot until there has been an interment.
- Flat-marker-only sections (no uprights): B-1, B-5, M-52, D-4C and part of T-1.
- Single grave upright: overall height 24-38 in (60.96-96.52 cm), max width 24 in (60.96 cm), depth 15 in (38.1 cm), set 9 in (22.86 cm) from the lot edge.
- Two grave plot upright: overall height 24-38 in, width 30-60 in (76.20 cm-1.52 m), depth 15 in.
- Four grave plot upright: overall height 36-42 in, width 36-84 in (91.44 cm-2.13 m), depth 15 in. (The bylaw prints the max height as "1.32m (42\")" - confirm which applies.)
- Dies must be at least 8 in (20.32 cm) thick. Bases must be granite, 6-8 in (15.24-20.32 cm) high (exactly 8 in on four grave plots), smooth sawn on the bottom; no sub-bases or plinths allowed.
- On two and four grave plots the base must show a 3 in (7.6 cm) border around the die on all sides; 24 in wide dies on single lots must be checked in at the bottom to give that border.
- Section B-61 infant graves: upright max 24 in high x 18 in wide x 12 in deep, or a flat marker up to 18 x 12 in. Child graves: upright max 30 in high x 18 in wide x 14 in deep, or a flat marker up to 24 x 18 in. Dies 6-8 in thick, base max 6 in high.
- Book/pillow markers need a concrete foundation and base: max 13 in (33.02 cm) high overall, base max 16 in (40.64 cm) deep, with a 2 in border showing (e.g. a 16 x 14 in pillow on an 18 x 16 in base). Not allowed on infant graves.
- Flat markers (bronze or granite only): single lot max 24 x 18 in, double plot max 36 x 24 in, cremation lot max 18 x 12 in; at least 4 in (10 cm) thick, flat on top and set level with the ground.
- All monuments and markers, including bases, must be granite or bronze; bronze attachments must be permanent. Field stones are not allowed.
- All foundations are built by (or for) the cemetery at the rights holder's expense; fees are in the Cemetery Price List. No foundations are built between November 15 and April 1.
- Monuments are centred at the head end of the lot; inscriptions on the back are limited to the family name; monuments can't be placed back to back except in Section K-31.
- Flat markers are installed only by the cemetery after the setting fee is paid, usually within 30 days if weather allows; markers are not stored over winter.
- Temporary upright markers are prohibited. Lanterns are allowed only if fixed to the monument base when it is built.
- A base may not differ by more than 1/2 in (1.27 cm) from the size on the work order.
- Columbarium niche fronts are inscribed and fitted only by the cemetery.
