Monument rules in plain English

  • Only one monument may be installed on a single grave, in the designated monument space at the head (west end); inscriptions go on the east (front) side.
  • Upright monument overall length (including base): minimum 24 in; maximum 36 in on a single grave, 76 in when centred over two or more graves.
  • Maximum overall height: 36 in if the monument is under 30 in long; 48 in if 30 in or longer; 60 in if longer than 48 in and the die is at least 10 in thick.
  • Die must be at least 8 in thick and sit on a granite base 6 to 12 in high, no more than 18 in front to back, with a 3 in border exposed on all sides; the bottom 6 in of the base must be rock-pitched and no notched corners.
  • Pillow (slant) markers: single grave max 36 x 18 in, two or more graves max 48 x 18 in; max 16 in high, front at least 4 in and back at least 6 in; no base needed but sides rock-pitched.
  • Flat marker at the head instead of a monument: max 24 x 18 in (over 18 x 12 in needs a foundation). One extra flat marker max 18 x 12 in may be added to a grave with a monument or pillow marker.
  • Cremation graves: flat marker only, no foundations; single 12 x 12 in, double 18 x 12 in.
  • All flat markers and footstones are 4 in thick with smooth-sawn sides and bottom; bronze markers need a granite base at least 4 in thick. The cemetery installs all flat markers at the rights holder's expense.
  • Materials: granite or bronze only (monuments must be granite). Candleholders and vases (granite, bronze or stainless steel) count toward the overall size and must stay within the 3 in base border.
  • Upright monuments and pillow markers need a concrete foundation at least 48 in deep and 2 in larger than the base on all sides, built by the cemetery at the rights holder's expense.
  • Foundations and memorial installations happen May 1 to October 31 only, weather permitting; markers are not stored over winter (December 1 to March 31).
  • A Request for Memorial Installation form with sizes, layout and inscription, plus foundation/setting payment (including Care and Maintenance), is required, and all charges must be paid first.
  • No cremated remains may be placed inside a monument or monument bench. Social service graves may only have a flat marker.
  • Memorial benches and trees are bought through the cemetery and placed where it decides. Niche fronts are inscribed by the cemetery.
  • Contractors need WSIB and at least $2,000,000 liability insurance and pre-approval before any work.
  • Always confirm with the cemetery office before ordering.
