Monument rules in plain English
- These by-laws (effective May 1, 2024) apply to all ten Mount Pleasant Group cemeteries; there are no separate per-cemetery rules in the document.
- "Graves" allow a flat marker only, set flush with the ground at the foot of the grave, unless your Interment Rights Certificate says otherwise. "Lots" allow an upright monument unless the certificate says otherwise. Check your certificate first.
- Only one monument is allowed per lot, and a bench counts as the monument. Monuments are centred at the head of the lot in the designated monument space.
- Upright monuments must be granite and/or bronze. Markers must be bronze or granite; some sections allow only bronze or only granite markers.
- Upright monument size is set by percentages, not fixed inches: the whole face (tablet + base, not counting vases) can be at most 15% of the lot area; the base at most 9% of the lot area and 75% of the lot's width; the base no more than 25% of total height.
- Monument base height: at least 4 in (10.16 cm), rising to 8 in for tablets over 1,300 lb, 10 in over 2,600 lb and 12 in over 5,200 lb. The bottom 4 in of the base must be rock-pitch and the bottom cut level.
- Monument tablet: at least 8 in (20.32 cm) thick; for monuments taller than 3 ft 6 in (1.07 m) add 1 in of thickness for every extra foot (or part). No part may be longer or wider than the base. A 1/4 in tolerance is allowed. All sides, ends and top must be finished.
- Free-standing crosses: at least 8 in thick up to 3 ft 6 in tall (thicker above that), shaft at least 8 in wide at the bottom (may taper to 6 in), arms at least 6 in wide, and dowelled.
- Dowels must be non-corrosive, at least 1/2 in diameter and set at least 6 in into both base and tablet. No uncovered vertical joints.
- On the back of a monument only the surname and a design are allowed (no given names, dates or epitaphs). No inscriptions on the sides.
- Concrete foundations are required for every monument and bench, and only the cemetery builds them, at the purchaser's cost, when weather allows. Foundations are the size of the base and at least 4 ft 6 in (137 cm) deep.
- The design, dimensions, materials, inscription and foundation diagram must be approved by the cemetery before the monument is delivered. Unapproved memorials can be removed at the retailer's expense. Unusual designs may be approved at the cemetery's discretion.
- Do not deliver a monument until the cemetery confirms the foundation is built; a delivery form is required.
- Flat marker maximum sizes (unless your contract says otherwise): adult grave 24 x 18 in (60.96 x 45.72 cm), child grave 20 x 12 in (50.8 x 30.48 cm), infant grave 16 x 10 in (40.64 x 25.4 cm).
- Granite flat markers must be 3 to 6 in thick, the same thickness throughout, smooth top and bottom. Bronze markers need a concrete base 4 to 6 in thick or a granite base 3 to 6 in thick (no more than 2 in larger than the bronze on any side), fixed with at least four anchor lugs.
- Only the cemetery installs markers, foundations and in-ground bronze vases or lanterns. Markers are not accepted for delivery from December 15 to April 1.
- Up to three bronze, granite or stainless-steel vases, candle holders or incense burners may be attached to a monument, at least 1 in away from the tablet. Candle holders must be fully enclosed.
- Photos, pictures and etchings on monuments need written consent and must be permanent, weather-resistant material. Photos are not allowed on flat markers or vases. Inserts and emblems (bronze, granite or stainless steel) must be pinned or clipped.
- Crypt fronts and niche fronts are inscribed and decorated only by the cemetery. Ceramic oval pictures are allowed on crypts only (frame at most 12 x 14.5 cm / 4.72 x 5.71 in).
- Temporary wooden memorials need a signed agreement, may stay up to one year from burial, and must be solid wood, at most 21 in wide, 42 in above ground and 60 in long. They are not allowed once a permanent memorial is in place.
- Natural burial areas allow no individual memorials at all; names go on a central memorial feature for a fee.
- Inscriptions need the written consent of the interment rights holder and cemetery approval. No dealer, manufacturer or quarry names or logos are allowed on memorials.
- No memorial can be installed until the interment rights and any arrears are fully paid.
- Always confirm with the cemetery office before ordering.
