Monument rules in plain English
- This undated booklet covers the cemeteries run by Park Lawn Limited Partnership: Riverside Cemetery (Etobicoke), Sanctuary Park Cemetery (Etobicoke), Westminster Cemetery (North York), Forest Lawn Mausoleum (North York) and Hillcrest Cemetery (Woodbridge).
- No monument or marker may be put up until the lot's Certificate has been issued, which happens only after the lot is paid in full.
- The foundation application must be in writing and signed by the lot owner and the monument dealer. The design, dimensions, material and finish of every part must be approved by the Manager before foundations are ordered.
- Only flat markers are allowed, except in areas designated for upright monuments. Only one monument is allowed per lot.
- Flat markers must be level with the ground, granite or bronze only, and 4 to 6 in thick. Maximum size is 30 x 24 in on a single grave and 54 x 24 in on a two-grave lot.
- Single grave in an upright section: base up to 30 x 14 x 6 in; die 24 to 30 in high and at least 6 in thick.
- Two-grave lot in an upright section: base at least 36 in long and up to 60 x 14 x 6 in; die 30 to 36 in high and at least 8 in thick.
- No monument may be under 6 in thick at its narrowest point, and an 8 in thick monument may be no taller than 3 ft including the base.
- Monuments must be granite only, with no rock edges. Sandstone, limestone, artificial or perishable materials are not allowed, and neither are freestanding crosses.
- Infant and child graves: granite or bronze flush markers up to 20 x 12 in. Cremation lots: granite or bronze flush markers up to 16 x 10 in.
- All foundations are installed by the cemetery, which also sets markers, at its scheduled charges. Payment must come with the order at least 15 days before setting. The foundation must be at least the size of the monument base, and if wrong dimensions were given it is rebuilt at the dealer's expense.
- No monument (other than markers) may be delivered until its foundation is complete. Check with the cemetery whether markers go at the head or foot of the grave.
- No lettering is allowed on the side of a monument facing an adjoining lot when there isn't room for a grave between the monument and the lot line.
- Corner posts (bronze or granite, 6 in square, at least 6 in deep, flush with the ground) may be set by the cemetery at the holder's expense.
- Candleholders are allowed only in designated spots next to or on the base of an upright monument; in flat-marker areas they may be built into a granite base. Vases must be non-breakable and next to the memorial.
- Shared memorials and memorial wall lots include a monument or bronze plaque supplied by the company. Engraving needs full-scale drawings approved by the Manager.
- Mausoleum crypt fronts take one bronze plaque (24 x 14 in single, 24 x 18 in double), up to two oval porcelain photos in 9 x 12 cm bronze frames, one bronze candleholder, two bronze vases and one bronze cross, all installed by cemetery staff.
- The Company orders all lettering on columbarium niche fronts, and no attachments are allowed on niche fronts.
- Fences, railings, walls, cut-stone copings and hedges around lots are prohibited.
- Contractors need the holder's signed application, liability insurance and WSIB coverage, and may not work on Sundays, holidays, after 5:00 p.m. on weekdays or after noon on Saturdays.
- Always confirm with the cemetery office before ordering.
Bylaws can change and some are read automatically. Always confirm sizes with the cemetery office before ordering. Monaco Monuments checks your cemetery's rules for you as part of every order.
