Monument rules in plain English

  • These rules are shared by both Toronto Hebrew Memorial Parks cemeteries (Pardes Shalom and Pardes Chaim) and follow Halacha (Jewish law).
  • Only one monument per burial site, set at the head (west end) of the grave on the foundation reserved for it.
  • Monument sizes are fixed, not just maximums. Single monument: die 30 in wide x 8 in thick x 30 in high (2'6" x 8" x 2'6") on a base 36 x 14 x 6 in.
  • Double monument: die 60 in wide x 8 in thick x 28 in high (5'0" x 8" x 2'4") on a base 72 x 14 x 8 in.
  • Limited design shaping is allowed: up to 2 in narrower on each side and 1/2 in thinner in the first 2 in above the die bed; from 8 in up, a single die must stay at least 22 in wide and a double at least 52 in wide.
  • Only two flat marker sizes are allowed: 12 x 14 x 4 in or 14 x 24 x 4 in.
  • Monuments, markers and bases must each be one solid slab of granite (no doweling or cementing slabs together). Colours allowed: pink, grey, black, brown, red, blue, green. Stanstead (Canadian grey) granite may only be used for bases.
  • Finishes: rock, steeled or polished; bases must be steeled or polished on top and rock on the rest. Beds and base tops cut level and true; 8 in die thickness must be kept.
  • Nothing may be affixed to a monument or marker. No human likeness (except hands) and no animal likeness (except stylized lions or doves).
  • Infant graves must be marked in granite; to put a monument on a child's grave a standard interment right must be bought.
  • The cemetery builds all foundations: 4 ft deep, below the frost line, as a continuous strip along the row, usually poured May 1 to November 1 after the first burial in a row.
  • A permit from the cemetery is required before any monument is installed; it needs the location, deceased's name, next of kin and a sketch with all dimensions and inscriptions, and is only issued once interment, opening, foundation and licence fees are paid.
  • Care and Maintenance charges: small marker (12x14x4) none; large marker (14x24x4) $50; upright up to 4 ft high and long $100; over 4 ft $200.
  • Monuments can't be delivered until the foundation is built and the dealer is notified in writing; the Superintendent checks size, design and inscription against the permit before installation.
  • No work on Shabbat or Jewish holy days. Unveiling times should be arranged with the office.
  • Always confirm with the cemetery office before ordering.
