Monument rules in plain English
- Before any monument or marker goes in, the Town needs the rights holder's written consent, a design and materials application from the supplier, design approval and payment of fees. The board may require plans sealed by a structural engineer.
- Only one monument or marker is allowed on any lot.
- Monuments and markers must be granite or bronze unless the board specifically approves otherwise. Boulder monuments are not allowed on lots.
- Single lot or upright cremation lot: monument up to 48 in (1.2 m) high and 16 in (0.4 m) front-to-back including the base. Side to side it may not exceed 75% of the lot width.
- Plots of two or more lots: up to 48 in high and 18 in (0.46 m) front-to-back including the base. Side to side, up to 75% of the plot width, to a maximum of 59 in (1.5 m) for two lots or 71 in (1.8 m) for three or more. A two-lot cremation plot is capped at 1.37 m (about 54 in).
- Monuments must be at least 8 in (20 cm) thick. An 8 in thick monument may be at most 42 in (107 cm) tall; taller ones need 1 in more thickness for each extra 12 in. No monument may exceed 120 cm (about 47 in) total height.
- Bases may be no more than 25% of the monument's total height. The bottom 4 in of a granite base must be rock pitch; rough unfinished bases are not accepted.
- Every die stone must be finished on all sides, ends and top, with bottoms cut level and true. Dowels must be non-corrosive, at least 1/2 in in diameter and set at least 6 in into both base and die. Nothing may overhang the base.
- Concrete foundations are required for all monuments, built by the Town at the purchaser's expense to the size of the base. They must be finished before the monument is delivered.
- Freestanding crosses: at least 8 in thick up to 42 in tall, with extra thickness above that, to a maximum of 120 cm (47 in). The shaft must be at least 8 in wide at the bottom and the arms at least 6 in wide.
- Flat markers go at the head of each lot, set flush with the ground. Maximum face size: adult lot 24 x 18 in; child lot 20 x 12 in; urn (marker-only) lot 20 x 12 in, centred on the lot.
- Granite markers must be 4 to 6 in thick. Bronze markers must sit on a concrete or granite base 4 to 6 in thick.
- Lettering is allowed only on the face of the monument toward the grave. Recessed ceramic pictures are the only inserts allowed on monuments, and no photos are allowed on flat markers or their vases.
- Bronze or stainless steel adornments, candleholders and vases may be part of a monument (candleholders count toward its overall size).
- Flower beds next to the monument must be 12 in deep and the same width as the monument base. Borders and edging are not allowed.
- Benches may not be placed on a lot or plot; memorial benches may be approved case by case as a cemetery feature. Memorial plaques on feature walls are supplied by the Town.
- Only the Town inscribes columbarium niche fronts, and no pictures, vases or other attachments are allowed on niches.
- Monument dealers must be approved by the Town, carry liability insurance and stop work before 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.
