Monument rules in plain English

  • The cemetery decides the maximum size, number and location of monuments on every lot, and the Superintendent must approve the style and dimensions before a monument or marker is delivered.
  • Two-grave lot: one upright monument up to 36 in (3 ft) high and 42 in (3 ft 6 in) wide, plus up to two footstones.
  • Single lots and cremation lots may have an upright monument only in designated areas and with the Superintendent's approval: single lot up to 30 in high x 24 in wide; cremation lot up to 24 in high x 24 in wide.
  • The die (upright tablet) must be at least 8 in (20.32 cm) thick and must sit on a granite base at least 8 in (20.3 cm) high, with at least 3 in (7.6 cm) of base showing on all sides. Base bottoms must be smooth sawn.
  • Monuments must resist 100 lb of sideways force without toppling (without caulking) and be pinned with stainless steel dowels set at least 3 in deep.
  • Delivered monuments may not differ from the base size on the work order by more than 1/2 in (1.27 cm).
  • Lettering may not go on both sides of a stone unless the adjoining lots are also owned.
  • Flat (flush) marker maximums: single lot 18 x 24 in; double lot 18 x 32 in; cremation lot in Sections I and II 12 x 20 in; cremation lot in Section U 18 x 24 in.
  • On a monument lot, one flat marker per grave (max 18 x 24 in) is allowed, but only after a casket burial has taken place (not on cremation lots).
  • One footstone per grave (max 16 x 24 in) may be added to a flat marker, only after full interment.
  • All flat markers and footstones must be at least 4 in (10 cm) thick, flat on top and set level with the ground so a mower can pass over them.
  • Markers must be bronze, granite or marble, with bases and markers cut level and true on the bottom.
  • All monuments, and any flat or pillow marker on a granite base, must sit on a pre-cast foundation sold and installed by the cemetery at the rights holder's expense. Foundations are not installed from December 1 to April 1.
  • Dealers must give at least 15 working days' notice for foundations, and no monument or marker may be delivered until the foundation is in place. Markers are not stored over winter.
  • In designated sections, white granite cornerposts 6 in square by 3 in deep can be bought and set flush at the lot corners.
  • Photographs attached to memorials are entirely the owner's responsibility.
  • Monument work is allowed only Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and every monument and marker must pass final inspection at the office before installation.
  • Always confirm with the cemetery office before ordering.
