Monument sizes at a glance
| Lot or section | Memorial | Width | Thickness | Height | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single Lot | Upright monument (overall) | - | up to 16 in | up to 30 in | Bylaw gives 30 inches (75 cm) height. Its "Width" of 16 inches (0.4 m) including base is the front-to-back size, so it is recorded as thickness here; side-to-side "Length" must not exceed 75% of the width of the single lot (no fixed number). |
| Single Lot | Upright monument (headstone / die) | - | at least 8 in | - | Bylaw gives 8 inches (20 cm). |
| Multiple Lots (Plot) - two lots | Upright monument (overall) | up to 59 in | up to 18 in | up to 60 in | Bylaw gives height 60 in (150 cm); "width" 18 in (0.46 m) front to back including base; length up to 75% of plot width, max 59 in (1.5 m) for two lots; thickness at least 8 in (20 cm). The 60 in height conflicts with the general 43 in (120 cm) cap. |
| Multiple Lots (Plot) - three or more lots | Upright monument (overall) | up to 71 in | up to 18 in | up to 60 in | Bylaw gives 71 inches (1.8 m) length for three or more lots; same height/width as two lots. See height conflict note on the two-lot rule. |
| Multiple Lots (Plot) | Upright monument (headstone / die) | - | at least 8 in | - | Bylaw gives 8 inches (20 cm). |
| Cremation (Upright only) Lot(s) | Upright monument (overall) | - | up to 16 in | up to 48 in | Bylaw gives height 48 inches (1.2 m); "Width" 16 inches (0.4 m) including base (front to back); length not over 75% of the cremation lot width. Thickness at least 8 inches (20 cm). The 48 in height conflicts with the General 43 in cap - confirm with the cemetery. |
| Cremation plot (two lots per plot) | Upright monument (overall) | up to 54 in | up to 16 in | up to 48 in | Bylaw gives 54 inches (1.37 m) max for two lots per plot (and not over 75% of plot width). |
| All lots (8 inch thick monument) | Upright monument (overall) | - | at least 8 in | up to 42 in | Bylaw gives 8 inches (20 cm) and 42 inches (107 cm). Taller monuments need 1 extra inch of thickness per 12 inches (or part) over 42 inches. |
| All lots | Upright monument (overall) | - | - | up to 43 in | Bylaw literally says "43 inches (120 cm)" - these don't match (120 cm is about 47 in, the same metric figure used for the cross maximum of 47 in). It also conflicts with the 60 in plot and 48 in cremation heights. Recorded as printed; confirm with the cemetery. |
| All lots (upright monument base) | Upright monument (base) | - | - | at least 8 in | Bylaw gives 8 inches (20 cm) but does not name the dimension; most likely base height. A slope monument base must be 4 inches (10 cm). Bottom 4 inches (10 cm) must be rock pitch. |
| All lots (freestanding cross) | Memorial (overall) | at least 8 in | at least 8 in | up to 47 in | Bylaw gives 8 inches (20 cm) min thickness up to 42 inches (107 cm) high, plus 1 inch (2.5 cm) per inch over 42, to a max of 47 inches (120 cm). Vertical shaft at least 8 inches (20 cm) wide at its base, may taper to 6 inches (15 cm) at the top; arms at least 6 inches wide. |
| Adult lot | Flat marker | up to 30 in | 4 to 6 in | - | Bylaw gives face area 30 in. x 24 in. (75 cm x 60 cm). Granite markers 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) thick. Head-to-foot length up to 24 in. |
| Adult Plot (Multiple Lots) | Flat marker | up to 48 in | - | - | Bylaw gives 48 in. x 24 in. (120 cm x 60 cm). Head-to-foot length up to 24 in. |
| Infant or Cremation Lot | Flat marker | up to 24 in | - | - | Bylaw gives 24 in. x 18 in. (60 cm x 45 cm). Urn-lot markers go in the centre of the lot or designated marker space. Head-to-foot length up to 18 in. |
Width is side to side, thickness is front to back, height is above the ground.

Monument rules in plain English
- Before any monument or marker goes in, the Board needs the rights holder's written consent, an Application for Approval of Monument Design from the supplier, design approval, and payment of fees. The Board may require plans sealed by a structural engineer.
- Only one monument or marker per lot; extra markers need Board approval.
- Monuments and markers must be granite or bronze unless the Board approves otherwise.
- Single lot upright: max 30 in (75 cm) high, max 16 in (0.4 m) front to back including base, and no wider than 75% of the lot width.
- Multiple-lot plot upright: max 60 in (150 cm) high, max 18 in (0.46 m) front to back, no wider than 75% of the plot, to a max of 59 in (1.5 m) for two lots or 71 in (1.8 m) for three or more.
- Cremation lots (upright only): max 48 in (1.2 m) high, 16 in (0.4 m) front to back, no wider than 75% of the lot; two-lot cremation plots max 54 in (1.37 m) wide.
- All monuments must be at least 8 in (20 cm) thick. An 8 in monument may be up to 42 in (107 cm) high; taller ones need 1 extra inch of thickness per 12 in over 42 in. The bylaw also caps any monument at "43 inches (120 cm)", which conflicts with the plot and cremation heights - confirm with the Board.
- Upright monument bases must be 8 in (20 cm) and slope monument bases 4 in (10 cm), with the bottom 4 in rock pitched; rough unfinished bases are not accepted. Nothing may overhang the base (1/4 in tolerance).
- Concrete foundations are required for all monuments, built at the purchaser's expense to the size of the base, and must be finished before the monument is delivered.
- Freestanding crosses: at least 8 in thick up to 42 in high, thicker above that, max 47 in (120 cm) high; shaft at least 8 in wide at the base.
- Flat markers are set flush with the ground at the head end of each lot (centre of urn lots). Max face size: adult lot 30 x 24 in, adult multi-lot plot 48 x 24 in, infant or cremation lot 24 x 18 in.
- Granite markers must be 4 to 6 in (10-15 cm) thick, smooth top and bottom. Bronze markers must be mounted on a granite base 4 to 6 in thick.
- No pictures on flat markers or their vases. Recessed ceramic pictures on monuments need Board approval; bronze or stainless steel adornments must be pinned or clipped on.
- Candleholders and vases on monuments must be bronze or stainless steel, mounted on top of the base at least 1 in from the monument, enclosed and drained; they count toward the monument's overall size.
- Boulder monuments and memorial benches need Board approval; memorial plaques may be fixed to designated features with approval.
- Inscriptions go on the face toward the grave; a family name or design may go on the back. Adding inscriptions, cleaning or removal needs the rights holder's written consent.
- Wooden crosses and other wooden memorials may not be left on graves.
- Always confirm with the cemetery office before ordering.
Bylaws can change and some are read automatically. Always confirm sizes with the cemetery office before ordering. Monaco Monuments checks your cemetery's rules for you as part of every order.
