Ethel Gyöngyi DEÁK
Ethel Gyöngyi Deak passed away peacefully at Woodlands of Sunset on April 12, 2026, at the age of 79. She was born in Nagyar, Szabolcs-Szatmár Megye, Hungary, on January 21, 1947. She arrived in Canada on January 20, 1963. Ethel was predeceased by her loving husband, The Right Reverend Mitrophoric Archpriest Nicholas Miklós Deak. She is survived by her loving children, Anna Deak and her husband Paul Young, and Joseph Deak and his wife Mary. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Brooklyn, Lucas, and Lincoln, who affectionately called her 'Mama'. Ethel will be sadly missed by her dear friend, Nick's cousin Maria Szemak, and her daughter Edith Pendli, as well as her extended family in Hungary. The family will receive friends at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence, located at 19 Young Street, Welland, on Friday, April 17, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., where a Panachyda will be held in the evening at 7 o'clock. The Divine Liturgy for the Dead will be celebrated on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Hungarian Greek Catholic Church, followed by the Rite of Committal at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Woodlands of Sunset or The Retina Foundation of Canada would be greatly appreciated by the family.
