Martha SAWATZKY (nee Esau)

Martha Sawatzky, née Esau, died peacefully on August 17, 2026, at the age of 97. She was the devoted wife of the late Nick Sawatzky, who predeceased her in 2022, and a mother to Kenn, Margaret, Walli (predeceased in 2023), and Gary. Her grandchildren include Lora Woolner, Aaron Woolner, Joschka, Katrin, Anneli, Evan, Alexandra, Nick, and Annie, and she was also beloved by great‑grandchildren Morgen, Suri, Nia, Reuben, Lucas, and Rudy. Martha was a long‑standing member of Waterloo‑Kitchener Mennonite Church and was known for her cooking, baking, quilting, and hospitality. She and her husband enjoyed extensive travel throughout Europe, North America, and the Caribbean, as well as winter stays in Florida. A private interment took place at Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo. The family expresses gratitude to Parkwood Mennonite Home, where she lived for four years, and to the palliative care team at WRHN Queen's Blvd. A celebration of her life and faith will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, with visitation from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. and a service at 11:00 a.m., followed by a light lunch. In her memory, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee Ukraine effort through the funeral home.
