Cato Josine Bayens passed away peacefully in her home at Park Place in Wasaga Beach, Ontario, on July 13, 2025, at the age of 90, with her beloved little dog, Holly, by her side. Born on October 19, 1934, on the island of Java in what was then the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), Cato lived an extraordinary life marked by resilience, love, and adventure. Her early childhood was idyllic until World War II disrupted her family's life. During the Japanese occupation, Cato, her sisters, and their mother were interned in camps while her father, a naval officer, was captured and imprisoned for the duration of the war. After the war, the family relocated to Australia, and eventually Cato returned to the Netherlands, a country she barely knew. In Amsterdam, Cato studied medicine and met her future husband, Johannes 'Jan' Hugo Bayens. They married in 1957 and immigrated to Canada soon after, settling in the Toronto suburb of Rexdale. There, they raised four children: Jacqueline, Audrey, John, and Ronald. Cato embraced her new homeland with joy, exploring it from coast to coast, camping, and eventually building a beloved family cottage in Kintail on Lake Huron. After Jan's sudden passing in 1974, Cato—then in her 40s—demonstrated her fierce independence by choosing to remain in Canada and raise her children on her own. She led them on countless outdoor adventures, encouraged their passions, and created a home rooted in strength and curiosity. An avid hiker, backpacker, and canoeist, Cato was a devoted member and leader in outdoor clubs, including the Bruce Trail Club, Ganaraska Hiking Club, and Ontario Underwater Explorers (despite never snorkelling herself). She spent years volunteering for food banks, children's camps, and environmental initiatives, and even participated in pioneer-era maple syrup demonstrations and raptor rehabilitation projects. Determined to complete the education she had once set aside, Cato returned to school in her late 40s and became a registered nurse, specializing in palliative care.
