Sister Maria, CJ HEINRICH
Sister Maria, CJ (Sister Maria Goretti), passed away on February 21, 2026, in her 93rd year of life and her 74th year as a member of the Congregation of Jesus (Loretto Sisters). Predeceased by her parents, John Heinrich and Mary Fischer; her brothers, John, Gordon, and William; and her sisters, Gabriella and Margitka. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Maxine and Margaret, nieces and nephews, and their families. Sister Maria was well known for her teaching ability in Math's and Latin, but a visual handicap ended her time as a classroom teacher, and she developed other ministries and new interests. She acted as Treasurer in several communities where she lived, became a very skillful photographer, and researched her family's history and their journey from Hungary to Canada and their influence on the Hungarian community in Toronto. This research resulted in a beautiful book, which Sister Maria wrote and published, filled with Heinrich family stories and wonderful old photographs. She also spent a period of time in Hungary, teaching English to the Mary Ward (CJ) Sisters in Budapest. In spite of being vision-impaired, she loved beauty and colour. She was a kind, gentle, loving woman, a joy to have in community life, and will be greatly missed by all who loved her. Friends may call at Presentation Manor, 61 Fairfax Crescent, Scarborough, on Friday, February 27th, from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Presentation Manor Chapel on February 27th at 10:30 a.m. Interment at Mount Hope Cemetery.
