PETER NORTH DEWDNEY
Peter North Dewdney passed away at his home on Toronto Island in the early morning of January 22, 2026, at the age of 82. Born in London, Ontario in 1943, Peter spent most of his life on Toronto Island. He was the son of Selwyn and Irene Dewdney. Peter worked as a Community Legal Worker, a Housing Advocate, and as Manager of Windmill Line Housing Co-operative. He was involved for many years in the fight to save Toronto Island homes from demolition by Metro Toronto. As a photographer, he created beautiful images of place and landscape often using a pinhole camera. For the last twenty-three years of his life, Peter was a prospector in northern Ontario. He was a brilliant self-taught geologist whose greatest joy was studying rock. Peter is survived by his wife, Gaye Jackson; his son Michael, and daughter, Elizabeth; his grandson, Jack; brothers, Donner and Christopher; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Alexander Keewatin, in 2024. Peter's family is grateful for the care and compassion he received from Princess Margaret Hospital and from Personal Support Workers and UHN Palliative Care during his final days at his home with family on Toronto Island. Private services will be held.
