RAY "YONZIE" ARIMA
Ray 'Yonzie' Arima died unexpectedly on Friday, May 15, 2026, one week short of his 99th birthday, at the age of 98. He is survived by his daughter, Candise; his sons, Daryl 'Manny' and Stafford; his grandson, Ryan; and his sister-in-law, Vi Arima. He was predeceased by Agnethe 'Aggie' Arima, Daisy Arima, Motoko 'Mo' Nishidera, and by siblings, Takako Tanaka, Toshiko Goto, Masayoshi 'Mush', and Masakuzu. Born in Marpole, BC, Yonzie lost his father to a logging accident. His family was relocated during World War II to a Japanese internment camp in Slocan, BC, where his mother passed away. Following the war, Ray and his siblings moved to Hamilton, ON to start a new life. Ray painted homes and commercial spaces with meticulous skill and operated Romney's, an upscale sheepskin clothing shop in Toronto in the early eighties. He enjoyed horse racing and the casinos, and was happiest at the racetrack or casinos with family and friends. He travelled extensively to places including Japan, China, Ireland, the UK, and across Canada and the USA. As there will be no funeral, the family welcomes memorial donations to Momiji Health Care Society in Scarborough, where Yonzie lived for seventeen years.
