FATHER MICHAEL G. SHIELDS, S.J.

Father Michael G. Shields, S.J., passed away on February 28, 2026, at the age of 98. Born in Ottawa in 1928, he was the son of George Shields and Marie Larochelle. A Jesuit for 78 years, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1948 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1962. Father Shields spent 35 years at the Lonergan Research Institute in Toronto, where he served as director, translator, writer, and librarian. He was particularly devoted to translating the Latin texts of Fr. Bernard Lonergan, S.J. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 5th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Manresa Spiritual Renewal Centre in Pickering, with Vigil prayers at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 6th at 10 a.m. in the Manresa Chapel, also in Pickering. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Jesuit Cemetery in Guelph. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Jesuit Advancement Office would be appreciated.
