Gary Grant Porter

Gary Grant Porter, of Sarnia, passed away peacefully with family nearby on April 25, 2026, at Bluewater Health, at the age of 84. Born in Sarnia on September 29, 1941, to Muriel and Eldon Porter, Gary earned his law degree from Queen's University and returned to his hometown, where he practiced law for nearly 40 years, first with Dawson & Taylor and then in partnership with Dave Elliott. In 1971, Gary married Freda, and together they raised three children: Kelley, Grant, and Kyle. Gary retired in 2007 and spent his time golfing, enjoying road trips, good meals and conversations with friends, following current events and debating politics, and, most importantly, cherishing time with family—especially his grandchildren. Gary was predeceased by his parents, Muriel and Eldon, and his son Kyle. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Freda Porter; daughter Kelley Packalen and her husband Mikko; son Grant Porter and his wife Christine Mok; grandsons Onni, Hannu, and Eetu Packalen; and sister Marilyn Smith. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be received at Smith Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Sarnia & District Humane Society or a charity of choice.
