Mr. Bernard Joseph Remi Mongeon (Bernie)
Bernard Joseph Remi Mongeon, known as Bernie, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, at the age of 88. Born in Ottawa's Lower Town, he was the son of the late Joseph Mongeon and Henricia Regimbald. Bernie is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn Barber, and their children, Danielle (Roger), Hélène (Louis), and Sylvie (Michel). He was a proud grandfather to Stephanie, Tracy, Jean Sébastien, Kelly, and Patrick, and a great-grandfather to Milo, Brooklyn, Billie, and Cody. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brothers Charles, Jacques, Fernand, and Gerald, and sisters Georgette and Madeleine, he is also survived by sisters-in-law Georgie, Lilianne, and Claudette, and brothers-in-law Earl Barber (Sue Richardson) and Tom Barber (Susan Verdier). Bernie dedicated 33 years to Foreign Affairs, with notable postings in London, Paris, and Tokyo, where he enjoyed singing at a local karaoke bar. A memorial service will be held on September 15, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes Church, 435 Montreal Rd., Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Alzheimer's Society Ottawa.
