Iona Ruth (nee Penner) SMITH

Iona Ruth Smith, nee Penner, passed away peacefully at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on July 14, 2026, at the age of 91. She was the beloved wife of the late Douglas Eric Smith, who predeceased her in 2011. Iona is survived by her children, Larry and his wife Lisa, and Todd and his wife Miranda, as well as her loving granddaughter Amanda and her husband Mike. She will also be fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Iona was predeceased by her parents, Cornelius and Rosalinda, and her sisters Shirley and Betty. Born in Saskatchewan, Iona spent her childhood on the family farm before moving to Niagara Falls with her parents. She met her husband Doug in Niagara Falls and they started a life together. Iona worked as a dedicated bookkeeper for the City of Stamford and was an active member of the Kinnettes, where she enjoyed fundraising and helping the community. She also volunteered with the Niagara Falls Soup Kitchen and Meals on Wheels until her mid-80s. Iona loved to travel and took many trips across Canada and to the Caribbean with her family and friends. She will be remembered for her sense of humour and meticulous attention to detail, which she maintained throughout her life.
