Yvonne Yuriko Yamaoka passed away on August 4, 2026, at the age of 92, surrounded by loved ones at Toronto's Scarborough General Hospital. Born on May 7, 1934, to Seitaro and Hatsu Ishii Yamaoka, she was predeceased by her parents, family members Ernie, Setsu, Sachi, and David, and her husband Harry Fischbach. Yvonne is survived by her nephews and nieces, Rick Yamaoka, Sandy Bates, Steven Shimotakahara, David Shimotakahara, and Lisa Shimotakahara, along with their families. A University of Toronto graduate, Yvonne had a distinguished career as a Toronto City and Parks planner from the late 1950s to the 1980s, championing public and community interests. Her life was marked by experiences as an early female urban planner and the racism and injustice of the Japanese Canadian internment, influencing her concerns for equity and community. Yvonne was married to Ed Broadbent from 1961 to 1967 and later to Harry Fischbach from 1977 until his death in 2010. She formed a deep bond with Tina Robeznieks in 2017. Private services will be held.
