GORDON EDWARD KIRKLAND
Gordon Edward Kirkland passed away on June 2, 2026, at the age of 72. Born in Toronto on October 12, 1953, Gordon moved to Port Coquitlam, BC in 1982 with his wife, Diane, and their eldest son, Michael. He had a distinguished career with the Federal Government in Ottawa and later as a self-employed individual in BC. At the age of 37, Gordon suffered partial paraplegia due to a car accident, after which he began writing humorous short-story columns published weekly in newspapers across North America, and later published 10 anthologies and one long-form fiction novel. A three-time recipient of the Stephen Leacock Award of Merit, Gordon was a finalist for the Leacock Medal for his books. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Diane Kirkland; his sons, Michael Kirkland and Dr. Brad Kirkland; his daughters-in-law, Maíla Duarte-Kirkland and Dr. Aimeé Richmond-Kirkland; and his sister, Lois Shimer. He was predeceased by his eldest brother, Jim Kirkland. A Celebration of Life will be held at Garden Hill Funeral Home on July 6th at 3:00 p.m. and will be livestreamed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Gordon Kirkland to either the Spinal Cord Injury BC.
