Samuel Edwin "Ed" MD, FRCS(C) Carroll

Samuel Edwin "Ed" Carroll, MD, FRCS(C), passed away peacefully at Amica in London on August 16, 2026, at the age of 97. He was the beloved husband of Bernice B. Haynes, who predeceased him, and the devoted father of Robert and Patricia. He was also survived by his wife Elizabeth Archibald Carruthers and her children Catherine and Christopher, as well as grandchildren Grace, Jackson, Jeremy, Austen, Olivia, great‑grandchildren Ruby and Hazel, and nieces and nephews Catherine, Paul and Michael. He was predeceased by his parents, Lyle and Lula, and his siblings Malcolm, Lois, Bertha and Annabelle. His professional career spanned more than five decades, including service as Chief Surgeon at St. Joseph's Hospital in London from 1966 to 1980, and as Professor of Surgery at the University of Western Ontario from 1966 until his retirement in 1999, after which he was named Professor Emeritus. An avid golfer, he competed in multiple Canadian Men’s Senior Championships well into his nineties. Visitation will be held at New St. James Presbyterian Church, 280 Oxford Street East, on August 21, 2026, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., with the service beginning at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Joseph's.
