B. G. Herbert Johnson
Herbert Johnson passed away on January 31, 2026, at the age of 100. He was the beloved father of Paul Annis of Leeds, U.K., and Penelope Johnson of Oliver, BC. Predeceased by his wife Esmé, who passed away in 2011, his oldest son Mark, who passed away in 2001, and his parents, The Rev. M. Bernard and Mary D. Johnson. Herbert was born in Wakefield, Quebec, and graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Master of Science in Zoology in 1951. He worked as an environmental aquatics biologist with the federal Department of Fisheries and made significant scientific contributions to the development of the first effective pesticide to control sea lamprey in the Great Lakes. Herbert and his family lived in Sault Ste. Marie, where he was involved in various community activities, including the Sault Opera Society and St. Luke's Anglican Cathedral. After retiring to Kitchener, Ontario, in 1986, Herbert continued to edit the Journal of Great Lakes Research and assist graduate students, and he established several theatre groups for seniors and the Old Salts Seniors Canoe Club.
