James "Ian" DOWNIE

James 'Ian' Downie passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on July 27, 2026, in his 98th year. He was the beloved husband of 53 years to Jill and loving father to Robert and John Downie and Andrew and Helena Debnam. Ian was also a loving grandfather to Mackenzie, Aidan, Colin, and Jake. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Kelly. Born in 1928 in Irlam, England, to Scottish parents, Ian went on to graduate with a history degree from the University of Leeds in 1950. He had a diverse career, working as a shipping agent in India, teaching in various schools, and eventually becoming an actor, with notable roles in theatre and television. Ian is remembered for his charismatic teaching and acting career, which included roles in productions such as A Man for All Seasons, On Golden Pond, and Murdoch Mysteries.
