Mary Copps-Sutherland
Mary Copps-Sutherland passed away on February 10, 2026, at the age of 75 in London, Ontario. Born August 15, 1950, in Hamilton, Ontario, she was a loving daughter, wife, and sister. She was predeceased by her parents, Victor (1988) and Geraldine (2006) Copps. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Barry Sutherland, as well as her sisters, Sheila Copps (Austin Thorne), Brenda Copps (David Smith), brother, Kevin Copps (Anne Theriault), sister-in-law, Luann Gowland (Bob), and many nieces and nephews. Mary was a graduate of Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School and McMaster University, where she was the first female Student Council President. She earned her CA and CPA designations and worked in corporate accounting, eventually as CFO within 3M Canada. Mary will be remembered as a fiercely independent and highly principled person with a strong moral and ethical compass. She was deeply spiritual and maintained a solid relationship with the Catholic religion throughout her life. Mary's dedication to social causes and liberal values reflected lessons learned within a family rooted in community service. A lifelong member of the Liberal Party, she ran as a Federal Candidate in London West in the 1988 federal election. In retirement, she was on various boards and advocated for the rights and safety of women. Visitation will be held at P.X. Dermody Funeral Home, 796 Upper Gage Ave., Hamilton.
