Edward KOTANEN (Ed)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edward Kotanen, known as Ed, on August 27, 2026, at St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton, Ontario. Born to Finnish immigrant parents in Thunder Bay, Ed's early experiences in the northern wilderness profoundly influenced him. He dedicated his career to the theatre, where he excelled in designing sets and costumes for productions across Canada, bringing vibrant worlds to life for audiences. Ed is survived by his beloved husband, David Rayfield, with whom he shared 34 years of love, as well as many lifelong friends and extended family in Finland. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Associated Designers of Canada or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Burial will take place at Temple Anshe Sholom Cemetery in Hamilton, with a celebration of life to be announced.
