Leon Evan STICKLE

Leon Evan Stickle passed away peacefully at home on November 5, 2025, at the age of 77. He was the beloved husband of Nancy for 58 years and the beloved father of Jayne, Christine Woodard and her husband Ken, and David. Leon was a devoted and proud Poppa of Olivia, Ella, Mitchell, and Ava. He is also survived by his cherished sister Gail Pearson and her husband Jim, and his sister Beverly Somerton of Glace Bay, NS, and her husband Gerald. Leon was a beloved brother-in-law to Richard and Linda Smith of Calgary, and Steven and Patricia Smith of London. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Leon and Nancy were married in 1967. He worked at Northern Electric and as a linesman in the OHA and Senior A hockey. Leon joined the NHL in 1970 as an on-ice official and worked for the league until 1997. He supervised officials in the Central Hockey League in 2000 and later fulfilled the role of Supervisor of Officials for the NHL until his retirement. During his NHL career, Leon officiated six Stanley Cup finals, 2069 regular season games, 206 playoff games, two Canada Cups, the 1979 Challenge Cup and Rendez-vous, and four NHL All-Star Games. In his retirement, Leon supervised and mentored officials in the OHA and OHL. He treasured his caring neighbours and many friends, and enjoyed spending time with his buddies at Guelph Lakes Golf and Country Club. The family would like to thank Dr. Meagan Williams, Dr. Chris Lund, and especially Nurse Samantha for her compassion and outstanding care. The family is grateful to the staff of Medigas for their support. As per Leon's wishes, a cremation has taken place and a private family Celebration of Life will be held at Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home in Fergus, Ontario.
