Jan Kowanda

Jan Kowanda, aged 83, passed away peacefully at home on August 31, 2026. Born on March 7, 1943, in Batiatycze, Poland, Jan's life was marked by hard work, devotion to his family, and a strong commitment to his community and faith. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Ewa Theresa; children Elizabeth (Travis), Alexander, and Misia (Michal); siblings Anthony and Maria; grandchildren Lucas, Julia, and Audrey; as well as his nephew Michal (Basia) and their children Jan and Kasia, and niece Marcela with her son Igor. Jan immigrated to Canada in 1970, having previously represented Poland as a competitive handball player. He was known for his infectious smile, love of dance and song, and his dedication to his church. Visitation will take place at Smith's Funeral Home, 1167 Guelph Line, Burlington, on Thursday, September 3, 2026, from 3:00 - 5:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Hamilton, on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., followed by burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
