Geraldine "Gerry" SMITH
Geraldine "Gerry" Smith passed away peacefully on August 17, 2026, at the age of 89. She was born in Hamilton and relocated with her mother and siblings to Burlington in 1959. Gerry completed her nursing education at St. Michael's Hospital School of Nursing in Toronto and worked as a registered nurse in a variety of roles throughout her career. She met her husband, Roy, after a movie at the Palace in Hamilton; their marriage endured for 62 years until Roy’s death at age 100. The couple raised two daughters, Kathryn (Kate) and Sheila, and were grandparents to John Oostindie, Sarah Erdmann, Graham Stewart, and Mary Stewart. Gerry’s extended Irish family included Paul and Irene O'Byrne, Sarah, Seamus, Paul Joseph, and their families. Her favorite activities involved following her grandchildren’s interests, attending dance recitals, rowing regattas, hockey games, soccer matches, and school productions, as well as exploring streams for tadpoles and frogs. She enjoyed music from the 1940s and 1950s, practiced seamstress work for relaxation, and maintained lifelong friendships through "The Fat Ladies Club," founded 48 years ago with Mary, Anita, and Marilyn.
